the wolf like bent sheep
by Paul Fox
Fornication! cried the wolf his bands of feet
Cradled in the waxy light her
Sculpting sides encapsulating the mess
This fair world curled like bent copper on
Leather she deemed cotton how coldly
He dared quiver surpassingly sullen as sheep
We lay ridden in sloth curled
like bent copper muffling
Stifling the bowels blown bleak tanned
Fornication! cried the wolf posing
For filth stemmed lice filched through
The bow-kite sullen as
sheep or thickets lean
Flouncing from Willy’s
Glimmering pride I scoffed
Dense & blunt
Benevolence
Crawling cleft sphere –
Thorny sheets
Of spittle:
curled like bent copper
Born in Liverpool, England , October 1977, Paul Fox shares his birthday with both Dylan Thomas and Sylvia Plath. Discovering music in his early teens, he initially began scribbling lyrics and learnt to play the guitar. After gaining relative, but short-lived success as a musician, Fox became disillusioned with the music business, turning his attentions to writing short stories and poetry. He knew he was a poet when it came to his attention he must ‘dumb-down’ his stories in order to achieve a certain grade in his Creative Writing degree. Essentially his stories were indeed poems, and poems elucidating a vacillating society molested by suppressed sexuality.
Founder and Editor in Chief Barney Rosset worked ceaselessly on the Evergreen Review until his death on February 21, 2012. This poem was among his final selections for future publication.
