beckett
by Bob Witz
1
beckett drifts like a cloud of fine rain
thru a landscape of blurred trees
and he enters the city
on a white horse
beckett is a great northern snowstorm
and everything is white and deep
and you can’t go anywhere
and you can’t do anything
and there’s nothing to do anyway
beckett is that snowdrift out there
the wind swirling the snow about
trees black in fields nearby
fences with prickly wire
sluggish cars on cleared roads
clear eyes and the sun pale
snowflakes drift slowly in the sky
2
the rain falls
he stands in a doorway
looking out
the rain is cold and blurring
3
beckett gets by although he
has lost interest in everything
4
this christmas
beckett didn’t give
and he didn’t get
he just sat in his room
looking straight ahead
and thinking
and smiling
5
In the movie theater
beckett was sleeping
snow was falling
and henry fonda was excited
and waving his arms
